A loyalty or referral program and an influencer's commission normally run as two completely independent systems and trigger side by side without conflict on the same sale — one tracks through the customer's own loyalty account, the other through the influencer's link or discount code. They typically only collide in two places: at checkout, if the influencer's discount code needs to combine with a loyalty or referral discount, and in the points base the customer ends up earning, if the discount code is deducted before points are calculated.
A customer is a member of the brand's own loyalty or referral program, and the same purchase simultaneously triggers commission to an influencer through a tracking link or discount code. It sounds like a fight over the same krone, but by default it isn't: the two systems track completely different signals and normally have no knowledge of each other at all. The influencer's commission is decided by the affiliate network or platform based on a click, cookie or discount code, the same mechanics covered in how influencer tracking actually works. Loyalty or referral points are decided by a completely separate loyalty platform (e.g. Smile.io or LoyaltyLion) based on the customer's own account. Neither system asks the other for permission before it fires its own side.
Unlike two creator links both claiming the same sale, where two identical signal types (two tracking links) compete for the same commission, this is two entirely different mechanisms that, by default, happily coexist: a customer can easily earn loyalty points, get a referral bonus approved, and trigger full commission to an influencer, all on the exact same order. That isn't a bug or a tracking gap — it's simply two separate ledgers, each running correctly on its own. The problem only shows up when the two systems actually touch in practice, and that typically happens in only three places.
The collision becomes concrete if the influencer's promo isn't just a plain tracking link but a discount code the customer types in at checkout — and the customer also wants to redeem a loyalty or referral discount as another code. According to Shopify's own documentation on combining discounts, discounts are split into three classes: product discounts ("apply to specific items or collections"), order discounts ("apply to cart subtotals") and shipping discounts ("modify shipping costs") — and "multiple discounts are applied to an order only when the setting on each discount allows the combination." In other words, the influencer's discount code and the loyalty discount only combine at checkout if both codes are specifically configured to allow it, and Shopify itself caps the total at "a maximum of 5 product or order discount codes and 1 shipping discount code on the same order." If the codes aren't set to combine, the customer can by default only apply one of the two discounts to the order — which one depends entirely on your own setup, not a fixed rule you can predict without checking it yourself.
Even when the influencer's discount code doesn't collide with the loyalty discount at checkout, it can quietly affect how many points the customer ends up earning. Loyalty platform Smile.io offers a setting called "Exclude coupon discounts used": when it's enabled, according to Smile.io's own documentation, "a customer who redeems a $10 discount code on a $100 purchase will only earn points on the remaining $90" — meaning the points base is calculated on the amount after the discount, not the original price. If the customer uses the influencer's discount code, it's this setting that actually decides whether the influencer's discount also "costs" the customer some loyalty points. LoyaltyLion solves the same question slightly differently: points earned are calculated by default on "total paid minus shipping" — already net of any discount, with no separate setting required. Two platforms, two different ways of reaching largely the same result — another example of why you check your own platform's documentation rather than assuming the mechanic is identical everywhere.
Both influencer commission and referral bonuses typically carry a built-in waiting period before the money or the points become final — but the two clocks are completely separate and never sync automatically. As covered in commission clawbacks, affiliate network Awin uses an auto-validation period (AVP), which per Awin's own recommendation is typically set to the return window plus seven days, and which on Awin's Access tier can run up to 67 days. LoyaltyLion's own referral program runs a similar but independent mechanic: "when a referee places a qualifying order, the referrer earns reward points, which are initially pending," and "those points become usable after the approval period" — which, per LoyaltyLion itself, "defaults to 14 days and is configurable." The two clocks are typically very different lengths, and neither platform knows anything about the other's deadline. If the customer returns the product after the influencer's commission has already been approved but before the referral bonus has (or the other way round), both reversals have to be handled manually, separately — the systems don't remind each other to do it.

A customer buys a DKK 500 product using an influencer's 15% discount code (DKK 75 off). The same customer is a loyalty member and redeems an already-approved DKK 20 referral discount, and the brand's Shopify setup has both codes configured to combine (both sit in the order-discount class, and Shopify allows up to five combinable product/order discount codes per order).

The point isn't the DKK 176 itself — it's that the three costs (influencer discount, referral discount and commission) stack on top of each other on exactly the same order, without either system flagging it on its own. Had the brand instead set Shopify's combination setting so only one of the two discount codes could be used, the numbers would look different — but that takes a deliberate decision, not something that happens automatically.
Our experience is that most brands don't notice this stacking effect at all until they go looking for it specifically — because neither the affiliate network nor the loyalty platform shows the combined cost across both systems in a single report. Our recommendation is the same discipline that already applies to attribution stacking and two creator links touching the same sale: decide it deliberately before the campaign goes live, rather than discovering it in the numbers afterwards. Should the influencer's discount code be able to combine with your loyalty program? Should a discount code reduce the points base at all? Those are questions you have to answer yourself in your discount and loyalty platform's own settings — neither platform picks the right answer for you by default.

That's a deliberate decision, not a technical necessity — but without a decision, you're leaving it to chance which code wins, or whether both get deducted at once. Work through the real margin impact, as in the worked example above, before you choose.
No. The collision at checkout only happens if the influencer's promo is itself a discount code. A plain tracking link with no code doesn't affect discount combinations or the points base.
