TikTok Shop's GMV Max: What It Means for Affiliate Creator Content

GMV Max is TikTok's automated campaign type for TikTok Shop advertising: it automatically blends paid ad budget with organic and affiliate creator content and optimizes toward total GMV (Gross Merchandise Value) rather than a single ad at a time. Since 15 July 2025, GMV Max has been the only campaign type TikTok supports for TikTok Shop sales — legacy formats like LIVE Shopping Ads, Product Shopping Ads and Video Shopping Ads can no longer be created for a Shop destination.

What GMV Max actually is

GMV Max is TikTok's automated campaign type for TikTok Shop advertising. Instead of building and managing one ad at a time, you give the system a product, a budget and an ROI target — and TikTok's algorithm selects the audience, bidding, placement and which creative to show, using signals from both organic and paid traffic. The goal isn't a single ad's performance; it's total GMV (Gross Merchandise Value — the total value of goods sold through your TikTok Shop) across all the content pointing at that product.

TikTok splits GMV Max into two variants: Product GMV Max, which automates product selection and ad creative to drive purchases, and LIVE GMV Max, which instead optimizes traffic into an ongoing livestream. This article focuses on Product GMV Max, because that's where the automatic blending with affiliate and creator content happens. For the LIVE Shopping mechanics themselves — how a product gets pinned and how a creator sells during a livestream — see TikTok Shop LIVE Shopping with influencers, explained.

How GMV Max pulls in creator content automatically

Per TikTok's own Product GMV Max documentation, the system automatically sources ad creative from several places at once — official accounts, business accounts, authorized TikTok accounts, Spark Ads posts, and affiliate content. In practice, you set a "video source" for the campaign:

  • Affiliate post — GMV Max automatically pulls videos from creators already enrolled in your affiliate program who've made content about the product. Per TikTok's own Product GMV Max guide, all orders resulting from the advertised product — including organic content and affiliate orders — get attributed to the campaign's GMV.
  • TikTok post — if a specific video doesn't appear under the Affiliate post source automatically, you can ask the creator for authorization or use the video's code, and select TikTok post as the source instead.

The key distinction: the Affiliate post source doesn't require a new, ad-specific permission beyond the affiliate enrollment itself — GMV Max can pull and amplify the content because it's already part of your affiliate setup. The TikTok post source, by contrast, requires the same type of authorization code as Spark Ads. That's genuinely the same permission mechanic described in creator whitelisting, Spark Ads and Partnership Ads explained — GMV Max isn't a competing ad format to Spark Ads; it's an automation layer on top that can draw on Spark Ads-authorized content as one of several sources.

Correction: this already happened on 15 July 2025, not 2026

Several secondary sources date this shift to "July 2026" — that's wrong. Per TikTok's own help page on the GMV Max migration: "Starting July 2025, GMV Max will be the default and only supported campaign type for TikTok Shop Ads." The shift has already happened; it isn't a future event.

Several independent trade sources (not TikTok's own material, but mutually consistent on the dates) describe the transition as having rolled out in three phases through 2025:

DateWhat happened
1 June 2025New TikTok Shop sellers could no longer create traditional Shop ad campaigns
25 June 2025Traditional ad functionality removed for all existing sellers
15 July 2025All remaining sellers required to switch to GMV Max, regardless of account age or sales history — the date TikTok's own help page itself states

Per TikTok's own help page, if you're using TikTok Shop as your sales destination with the Sales objective, you can no longer create, edit or duplicate LIVE Shopping Ads, Product Shopping Ads or Video Shopping Ads. Existing campaigns in the legacy formats remain active, and LIVE Shopping Ads can still be created if you select a TikTok identity instead of a Shop as the destination — and Video Shopping Ads can still be created via Showcase. But for a TikTok Shop ad specifically, GMV Max is, in practice, the only way in.

What this actually means for an affiliate creator

If you're a creator enrolled in a brand's TikTok Shop Affiliate Program and you've made a video about a product, that video can, in practice, get used as paid ad creative under GMV Max without a new, separate ad-specific request from the brand — because "Affiliate post" is already a valid content source. Your commission, set by the brand in the Affiliate Center, is unaffected by whether the video gets amplified with paid spend — it's the same commission structure either way. For how the underlying affiliate relationship itself works — enrollment, link tracking, and how commission actually gets calculated — see affiliate influencer marketing: how the model works.

That's a genuine change from before: previously, running your video as an ad typically required a separate whitelisting step (a Spark Ads code). With GMV Max, that can now happen automatically, simply because you're an affiliate. If you want control over whether your content gets used as a paid ad, that's a conversation to have directly with the brand before joining its affiliate program — the mechanism itself doesn't give the creator a separate in-app opt-out for the "Affiliate post" source beyond leaving the affiliate program entirely.

Is this actually relevant to a Danish brand yet?

Only partially. GMV Max lives entirely inside TikTok Ads Manager for campaigns using TikTok Shop as the sales destination — and as covered in TikTok Shop LIVE Shopping with influencers, TikTok Shop isn't yet live in Denmark. A brand that only sells into the Danish market can't use GMV Max today, regardless of whether it wants to.

If you already sell into one of the ten European markets where TikTok Shop is live (Germany, the Netherlands and the UK among them), GMV Max is immediately relevant — because since 15 July 2025, it's genuinely the only way to run a TikTok Shop ad in those markets. There's no alternative to opt into instead.

Decision framework

IF you already sell into one of the ten live TikTok Shop markets, and you use TikTok Shop as your sales destination → you're already using GMV Max, whether you actively chose it or not — the legacy Shop ad formats can no longer be created.

IF you only sell into Denmark → GMV Max isn't available yet, because TikTok Shop itself isn't. Build your affiliate relationships and content library now, so you're ready once TikTok Shop lands in the Nordics.

IF you want full control over which specific creator content gets used as a paid ad → set "TikTok post" as the source and request a separate authorization code, rather than letting the "Affiliate post" source pull automatically from your whole affiliate program.

IF you don't have a large video library yet → TikTok's own documentation states that every product can be promoted using GMV Max regardless of its initial GMV scale or available creative volume — but the more affiliate and organic content exists about the product, the more the algorithm has to work with.

Worked example: running the numbers on a GMV Max flight

The numbers below are hypothetical and only illustrate how a GMV Max budget, an ROI target and affiliate commission fit together — this is not a claim about expected performance, and it is not a real Make Influence customer case.

A brand already selling via TikTok Shop in Germany sets a GMV Max budget of DKK 2,000/day for 30 days and an internal ROI target of 5x (meaning: for every krone of ad spend, the brand wants at least DKK 5 of attributed GMV).

  • Total ad spend: 30 × DKK 2,000 = DKK 60,000
  • If the 5x ROI target is hit: attributed GMV = DKK 60,000 × 5 = DKK 300,000
  • Assume 40% of that attributed GMV comes from affiliate content (the Affiliate post source), at a 15% commission set in the Affiliate Center: affiliate-attributed GMV = DKK 300,000 × 0.4 = DKK 120,000
  • Commission paid to affiliate creators: DKK 120,000 × 15% = DKK 18,000
  • Brand's total cost: DKK 60,000 (ad spend) + DKK 18,000 (affiliate commission) = DKK 78,000, against DKK 300,000 of attributed GMV

The commission is paid on top of the ad spend — GMV Max doesn't replace affiliate commission, it layers paid amplification on top of content that's already generating sales organically.

Common mistakes and misconceptions

  • Assuming GMV Max is a new ad format alongside Spark Ads. It isn't — it's an automation layer that can draw on Spark Ads-authorized content as one of several sources.
  • Thinking the switch to GMV Max is still ahead of you in 2026. For TikTok Shop ads under the Sales objective, it already happened, with a final deadline of 15 July 2025.
  • Expecting GMV Max to change how affiliate commission is calculated. It doesn't — the commission structure in the Affiliate Center is unchanged.
  • Assuming the "Affiliate post" source gives a creator a separate consent prompt in the TikTok app. Enrolling in the affiliate program is, in practice, the only approval that source requires.
  • Planning a Shop campaign around the legacy ad formats. LIVE Shopping Ads, Product Shopping Ads and Video Shopping Ads can no longer be created for a Shop sales destination.

Make Influence's operational perspective

In Make Influence's experience, the real consequence of GMV Max isn't the automation itself — it's that brands with an already-healthy affiliate setup and a steady flow of creator content get significantly more out of every ad krone, because the algorithm has more creative sources to test and amplify from. A brand with only a couple of affiliate videos about a product will typically see weaker results than one with a broad, ongoing content flow — GMV Max amplifies what's already working, it doesn't create it from scratch. We recommend that a brand planning to use GMV Max prioritize recruiting and activating affiliate creators before ramping up the campaign, rather than expecting the automation to solve a thin content base on its own.

FAQ

Is GMV Max the same as Spark Ads?

No. Spark Ads is an authorization mechanism that lets a brand run a specific, already-existing video as a paid ad from the creator's own account. GMV Max is an automated campaign type for the whole of TikTok Shop that can draw on Spark Ads-authorized content as one of several sources — see creator whitelisting, Spark Ads and Partnership Ads explained for the Spark Ads mechanics themselves.

Can a Danish brand use GMV Max today?

Only if you already sell into one of the ten European markets where TikTok Shop is live. If you sell exclusively into the Danish market, neither TikTok Shop nor GMV Max is available yet.

Does GMV Max change how affiliate commission is calculated?

No. The brand still sets commission per product in the Affiliate Center, unchanged by whether GMV Max amplifies that content with paid spend.

Does GMV Max require a large video library to work?

No — per TikTok's own documentation, every product can be promoted via GMV Max regardless of scale or available creative volume, though the algorithm naturally has more to work with the more affiliate and organic video exists.

Can you still create the legacy Shop ad formats?

Not for a Shop sales destination under the Sales objective. LIVE Shopping Ads can still be created if you select a TikTok identity instead of a Shop as the destination, and Video Shopping Ads can still be created via Showcase — but for TikTok Shop itself, GMV Max is, in practice, the only route in.

Does a creator need to give separate permission for their affiliate video to be used in a GMV Max campaign?

It depends on the source. If the brand uses "Affiliate post" as the source, enrollment in the affiliate program is, in practice, the approval required. If the brand instead uses "TikTok post" as the source for a video that doesn't appear automatically, the same type of authorization code required for Spark Ads applies.

How does a creator get enrolled as a GMV Max "Affiliate post" source in the first place?

Through TikTok Shop's own Open Collaboration or Target Collaboration mechanism — an open collaboration lets a creator find and pick up the product themselves, while a target collaboration is the seller inviting specific creators directly. See Open Collaboration vs Target Collaboration, explained for the full mechanics, including how commission priority works when both are active on the same product.
