A QR code and a short spoken or printed link solve the same problem — getting someone from a physical moment (a creator's merch, an event appearance, a print placement) to a trackable online sale — but they fail differently. A QR code, once scanned, lands on a fully trackable, UTM-tagged URL almost exactly like an ordinary click; a short link depends entirely on the person remembering and typing it correctly afterward, with no scan step to fall back on. Neither should stand alone.
A QR code and a short spoken or printed link solve the same underlying problem: getting someone from a physical moment with no clickable link at all to a trackable online sale. Both show up in practice on a creator's merch, at an event appearance, or on a printed out-of-home placement — but the two mechanisms fail in different ways, and it's worth knowing the difference before deciding which one (or both) to use.

The Academy's usual tracking setup — tracking links, discount codes, UTM parameters — assumes everything starts online: a post, a link in a bio, a click. Offline-to-online tracking covers the situation where the first touchpoint isn't digital at all: a creator shows off your product at a pop-up, a printed poster in a physical store mentions a partnership, or a podcast host says a link out loud. What all of these share is that there's nothing to click on in the moment itself — only two real paths forward: the person scans something, or the person types something in themselves, later.
A QR code is, technically, just a URL encoded as an image. When someone scans it with their phone's camera app, the phone opens the underlying URL in the ordinary browser — and from that point on, tracking works exactly like a normal online click: the URL can carry UTM parameters and a unique creator ID, the same as any other tracking link, and the landing page sets its cookie as usual. The only thing that's genuinely different is the entry point: a scan instead of a click.
That also means a QR code inherits exactly the same weaknesses as an ordinary tracking link, plus one extra: the person has to actively pull out their phone and point the camera at the code. That's an added action a link in an Instagram bio doesn't require — and it's usually that step, not the scanning technology itself, that costs you the most people.
A short or "vanity" link — something like "brand.com/anna" or "brand.com/anna15" — is built to be said out loud or printed somewhere the person can't or won't scan in the moment: a creator mentioning it at an event, a podcast host reading it into the microphone (the same mechanic covered in podcast sponsorships), or a printed poster with no room for a QR code. The link can still carry a unique segment per creator, so the destination page or a built-in UTM still identifies who drove the visit — but only if the person types it correctly afterward, from memory or from a photo they took of it themselves.
That makes a short link behave much closer to a discount code than to a tracking link: it depends on an active, correct, manual entry from the person themselves, with no technical fallback if they simply don't bother. Both mechanisms lose people — the question is at which point. A QR code typically loses people before the scan even happens: print that's too small, a poster in poor lighting, a logo printed on a moving textile product, or the person simply not bothering to pull out their phone in that specific moment. A short link typically loses people after the moment has already passed: they forget it, misspell it, or never find the screenshot they took of the poster again. The QR code fails at the interaction itself; the short link fails in the memory gap in between.
The two mechanisms aren't mutually exclusive, and in practice the most robust setup uses both at once: print the QR code as the primary path, and add the short link as a visible caption right underneath ("or go to brand.com/anna") for anyone who can't or won't scan. It costs nothing extra to produce and captures both types of behaviour — people who scan immediately, and people who'd rather type it in later.
The numbers below are made up, purely to illustrate the mechanism — not a real Make Influence customer case, and not a benchmark for scan rates.
A brand hands out 200 branded stickers through a creator at a pop-up event. Each sticker carries a QR code linking to a UTM-tagged landing page, with a short link ("brand.com/pop-up15") printed underneath as an alternative — both paths lead to the same 15% discount code at checkout.
Those 22 aren't a red flag — they're precisely the group a QR-code-only setup would have lost entirely, because the discount code was the one common thread both paths shared.
In our experience, the biggest mistake is treating QR code and short link as an either/or choice. The two capture different kinds of behaviour, and they cost almost nothing to combine on the same physical placement. The same underlying principle applies here as in our article on local and brick-and-mortar businesses: the tracked number from scans and typed links is a floor, not a ceiling, on the real effect — the goal is minimising avoidable loss, not expecting a complete picture.
Yes. A QR code is only as trackable as the URL it points to — without UTM parameters (or a unique creator ID built into the link itself), the scan disappears into ordinary traffic, exactly the way an untagged link would online.

They're reliable in different ways. A QR code captures what happens after a successful scan almost as precisely as an ordinary click. A spoken link captures people who had no way to scan in the moment at all, but requires them to remember and type it correctly afterward.
The tracking is still intact once they open the photo and scan it later — the QR code itself doesn't change by being photographed. The only loss is if they never come back to the screenshot.
